The Philippine Consulate General in Xiamen held commemorative activities in celebration of its 27th Anniversary of establishment on 28 February 2022.
Consul General Maria Antonina M. Mendoza-Oblena led the flag raising ceremony to kick-off the program.
In her remarks, she expressed appreciation to the Consulate General’s officers and staff for their exemplary service and professionalism despite the challenges of the pandemic. She also remembered the people who paved the way for the Consulate’s establishment and for those colleagues who served before in the past 27 years.
Consul General Mendoza-Oblena who played the piano with the newly organized choir composed of the Consulate General’s selected personnel provided a spiritually uplifting thanksgiving mass which was officiated by Rev. Father Joseph Cai.
It is also a fitting occasion to remember then Foreign Affairs Secretary Roberto Romulo, who, during an ASEAN Ministerial Meeting in 1994, agreed with then Chinese Foreign Minister to open Consulates General in Xiamen and Cebu.
The Consulate General in Xiamen was established in January 1995 and formally opened on 28 February 1995 in the presence of then Philippine Ambassador to China, Romualdo Ong and several Philippine and Chinese government officials. (See Philippine Consulate General in Xiamen Historical Background).
Since its establishment, the Consulate General further strengthened friendship and cooperation in the areas of trade and investment, tourism and people-to-people exchanges between Fujian and Jiangxi provinces and the Philippines.
